Christmas 2011

Christmas this year was different than any other years in the past. This year my side of the family including my parents and Sergiy and Jules with the boys got together at our house to celebrate the birth of our Savior. And when Nepomyashchyys get together...things get wild:) Our house was filled with laughter and joy. The kids had plenty of attention, and little Miss Kira was hardly ever put down which she loved.
On Christmas Eve we all went to the Russian church service which actually turned out to be a play instead of a service. And when the kids were tucked in beds, Serg shared with us a message about how Christ was born and what the King of all had to condescend to for the love of us, sinners. It was great to have my whole family at the table with some candlelight and tea, contemplating on the Word of the Lord. In the morning we attended an American church service. In the evening, before dinner the family gathered to sing some Christmas carols (I won't post a video if this to spare certain people of embarassment:)) We sang in Ukrainian and English. And though our voices were far from perfect, our hearts were overfilled with praises.
Cliff and I decided not to do presents on Christmas Day this year and we'd like to keep this tradition from now on. Just for the sake of focusing on Christ on that day. I opened a present or two before Christmas but the majority of the presents are opened during the 7 days after Christmas preceeding New Years Eve. Not only it keeps us focused on Christ on Christmas Day but also gives the kids an opportunity to savor each gift they receive. When Aaron opens a toy he plays with that only toy all day long. And just today as we're finishing opening the remaining presents under the tree I thought of how blessed my kids are to have so many people love and care about them to send them all these wonderful gifts and toys. Thank you!
Well, that was our Christmas 2011. Hoping for many more of those. And here are the pictures.

Jack of All Trades

I should make a collage of all Aaron's dress up and pretend plays pictures. Here is one of a couple of months ago: Aaron the Batman

and another one of a Chick-Fil-A worker:)

And one of Kira from when she was about 10 months old

Watch out, world! Here she comes!

Kira made her first baby steps at 11.5 months, and then she'd take it slowly. She likes showing off in front of Cliff that she can walk but doesn't do it much when it's just me. Today she really picked it up. Maybe she heard that the boys are coming and she will need to keep up with them?:)

Counting down the days till babushka and dedushka visit (7 more days) and till the cousins come (8 more days). It's going to be a busy house but makes me excited! Aaron is so very excited that the boys are coming. We will try to have them share a room. This is an old picture but so cute, I wanted to share.

VERY IMPORTANT. New Christmas Traditions-I am a believer (a note from my brother)

Let me share a story of my last Christmas in Ukraine. When I was 20 years old, for the first time I heard of the true reasons why Christ had to be born, live, suffer and be crucified. The story penetrated my heart so deeply that I could not wait till the next Sunday to go to church and reconcile my life with God. None of my friends were Christians, as a matter of fact, all of my friends did not have a good opinion about them. Christians in our town were considered to be a sect: people who do not cuss, do not drink, do not have pre-marital sex, do not lie, do not steal, do not complain, are not grouchy, etc… That Sunday, as I was walking the two mile distance across the Soviet Union collective farm fields, I cared little about the fact that I will lose all my friends. That did not really matter anymore. When I came to the church that morning, I told everyone who was present there that I wanted to know God, to love Him, to be called one of His children. I said that I was guilty of living a life that as if God did not exist. Among others I was known as a nice guy, the one who did well at school, never hurt anyone, always helped, but I knew that inside, my heart was rotten with pride, self love, fake humility, evil thoughts and lustful desires. The people in the church gladly accepted me into their family. One fellow came to me and said, “You know, tonight we are getting together for a Christmas celebration. Why don’t you come and join us?” I was shocked. The problem was that it was September. “What do you mean? Who celebrates Christmas in September?” He said that there is nothing wrong with celebrating Christmas every day. Now that sounded strange to me, and so he proceeded to explain to me the true meaning of Christmas.

If we consider what happened on that day 2000 years ago (God becoming a man, born to be crucified) and why that happened (so that those who believe in Him will be freed from eternal hell and escape God’s righteous punishment for their sins), we have all the reasons to celebrate it every day. Thus the birth of Christ is the expression of God’s love towards those who do not deserve it. In other words, God, motivated by His holiness and love, sacrificed Himself for wicked humanity.

Human sins are so serious that there is no other way for us to be reconciled to God other than through the crucifixion of His Son. Think about it. If there would be any other way for God to save sinners, and we know that God is all powerful, He would have used that other option. Crucifixion of Christ would be the last resort. The problem is that it is the only option. Because nothing can satisfy the righteous demands of God to atone for sins of people unless it is a pure and blameless sacrifice. On this day we need to reflect on what it cost God to save us. That reflection should result in honor and glory of God. Our primary response on that day should be an examination of our hearts in the light of what God has done. And that examination should result in another step of becoming more and more like Christ, whose birth we are celebrating: meek, humble, self-controlled, patient, kind, loving, joyful, etc… Thus it is appropriate to celebrate Christmas every day, even in September. The problem is that unfortunately, we do not see Christmas being celebrated properly even on the 25th of December.

Some folks here think that Christmas is a time for a family to get together, others think that it is a time of giving, because they say God gave us His Son, so let us focus on giving and helping others. The problem with these two reasons is that we lose focus of what exactly happened on Christmas and what we should do as our response to it.

When the angels appeared to the shepherds on the first Christmas day, they told them that “unto you the Savior is born”. As a result the shepherds, the Bible says, “glorified and praised God”. When John the Baptist’s father spoke of the upcoming Christmas he also praised God because of the “salvation provided to God’s people through the forgiveness of their sins”. The birth of Christ, in other words, is linked with the salvation of sinners. Salvation from sin and from the punishment of sin. This is the central point of Christmas.

There is nothing wrong with getting together on Christmas, there is nothing wrong with giving to others, as long as we keep the reason for the season in perspective and “getting together” and “giving to others” do not dominate our minds and overshadow the true meaning of Christmas.

So let me come with a couple counter proposals for a new tradition for Christmas. The first one is that we forget about any gifts for Christmas and instead will exchange gifts on some other day, for example New Year or Thanksgiving or some other day or a day before Christmas. It may be difficult for an American culture to imagine, when there is not enough days in a calendar between the black Friday and December 24th. But this is how it is done in former Soviet Union countries. No gifts are exchanged on Christmas; all gifts are exchanged on New Year. It allows not polluting the holy holiday with consumerism which only produces jealousy, greed, hurt feelings, aggravation, and more importantly the reason for the season is lost. The family still should gather together, but we should not lose focus why we gather together. Back at home typically on Christmas besides a prayer before the meal we would read scriptures, sing couple of songs, everyone would pray in a circle. Church is obviously a vital part of the day, and we would conclude the day with visiting unbelieving neighbors who are still in the dark. For some reason, I think that every single part of this will be hard to implement in the context of the American culture, especially the part about not worrying about buying gifts and receiving gifts. But if the gifts are such a vital part of the holiday, then the least what we can do probably as we gather together is to read some portion of Scripture and spend some time in prayer, besides just asking God to bless our food, health and wealth. This would certainly be a good start in the right direction. We as a family went through a number of turbulent events in the past couple of years. And we do not know what waits for us in the future or how many of us even have a future tomorrow. But we do know that the future is much brighter with God than without Him.

If neither of the above mentioned options work, then I have yet another proposal. Let's just abandon all references to Christmas on that day and greet each other with a "happy holiday". For the unbelievers among us, this would be probably the necessary option. Otherwise, every year on December 25 you are adding to the list of your un-atoned and un-forgiven sins the violation of the 3rd commandment when you take Lord's name in vain. Just abandon all references to Christ on that day and it will be easier for you on the judgment day. This may sound sarcastic, but this is indeed one of the options that Julie and I are contemplating: celebrating Christmas properly on Jan 7 when Ukraine celebrates it and December 25 will be just a family gathering and gifts and all that stuff. The main point here is that Christmas is not about us and what presents we can get or give on that day. It is about God and what He did for those who love Him. If there is no love for God in your heart, then "Happy holiday" is the best you can do on the day, unless you are willing to devote your heart to God.

With my the best intentions,
Sergiy

Happy Fall!

I added a new gadget to the left of the screen for Fall pictures and more. Kira's 1st Birthday is creeping up too fast. We are so so thankful for the past year. God is good!

First Snow

We have our first snow this year in VA. Very pretty, though it's not sticking to the ground yet, it's too warm for it.
I took these pictures the other day to capture how these two play with each other. This is what happens on most days. Kira needs to be where Aaron is and play with the same toys Aaron is playing with and vice versa. They can be rough (very rough) with each other and neither will complain about it. Though when Kira is not in the mood she'll scream when Aaron even lightly brushes against her. But what precious about the collage below is how Kira is all over Aaron, pulling him, trying to eat his hair, pinching him, and he just lets her do that. I think how blessed they are to have each other. Aaron didn't have a buddy to play with when he was Kira's age, but she is surely happy to be around him. I hope and pray that they will have a special place in their hearts for each other throughout their lives. That would make me very happy.

Lion King 3D

Last Sunday was Aaron's first trip to the movies with me. We watched Lion King 3D, and really enjoyed it. We got a bag of popcorn and Sprite, kicked back and enjoyed the movie:) I hoped Aaron would sit still for at least half of the movie but he did excellent and sat through the whole cartoon. I think it's a great way to spend one-on-one time with Aaron. And what a great way to spend my birthday and a rainy cold Sunday.
Birthdays are good occasions for me to remember how blessed I am, having spent a whole year with my kids and Cliff. And I especially like it when a birthday falls on a weekend because Cliff can make a whole day special for me. On Sunday he took the kids downstairs at 6 am so I can get some sleep. While I was asleep he took both kids in their jammies to Wegman's, bought me a beautiful orchid and a yummy breakfast. The funny part was to see how he dressed the kids-Kira was wearing Aaron's socks and Aaron was wearing Kira's:) According to Cliff, they fit the kids just right:)

Thank you, friends and family, for your Birthday Wishes and presents!

Unbelievable

For the first time Aaron did not cry AT ALL when we were going to pre-school or when I dropped him off. He acted like he'd been doing it all his life-dropped his backpack in the bin, picked his name off the wall and went to play (but came right back to give me and Kira a good bye kiss) I was shocked.

Three piglets

Aaron has read the Three Piglets story many many times, and yet every time he comes up with "why" questions, after nearly every sentence.
-Mama, why was the wolf bad?
-Because he wanted to eat the piglets.
-But it's ok to eat pork!

or this. What first comes to your mind when you're asked: "Why did the piglets build houses?" If you answered like me, to protect themselves from the wolf, then you're wrong. "No, mama, that's wrong. They built houses because winter was coming" Check the beginning of the story:)Apparently, sometimes those "why's" come to check me.

Today Aaron asked me to make him mustaches. I laughed when I saw this picture. At the moment I took it he looked at the rim of his hat.

Opposites

Cliff and Aaron were having waffles for breakfast. Cliff asked Aaron what the opposite of "dry" was. Aaron was having a hard time answering it correctly.

Cliff: Well, what if my waffle went to take shower, what would it be?
Aaron: It would be an anthropomorphic waffle!

Pictures

I haven't seen anyone happier at 5:30 am. Awake and ready to play. It's been our routine for the past 2 weeks.
Poor Aaron still cries when goes to preschool. Thankfully he stops crying the moment I turn around the corner, and he's so proud of himself when I pick him up: "Mama, I cried at first, but I stopped when you left" Last week (Day #2) he spent some time at the door telling the teachers he would sit there until I come.

What started like a walk turned into mud play with the neighbor girls.

Aaron's First Soccer Practice

Today was Aaron's first soccer practice with Tiny Mites. He was cute and funny to watch. He loved being on the team but he was so consumed with his new outfit that every now and then he'd stop and check his uniform, make sure his number is still on the back, adjust his socks and shorts. He does a good job kicking the ball but still needs to learn to listen to the coach. And though the day was cold and rainy, we all enjoyed Aaron's first practice followed by a lunch at Chick-Fil-A.

Kira is 9 months old

Look at her! Hasn't she change so much in the last 9 months? Not only outwardly but inwardly as well. I remember talking to my mom on the phone and describing Kira who was about 5 months old then. I always said: "She's such a calm baby", and my mom always said: "Oh, just wait...you were calm at first too and then you started cruising for bruising". Oh, how right she was. In the past month I had to put on hold my hobbies because after a busy day with these two busy bees I am all exhausted and all I want to do is lie on the couch in front of TV with a cup of Jasmine green tea and my favorite man by my side:) God is good!
So, Kira is constantly on the go these days. She crawls faster than I walk. She pulls herself on anything and walks alongside the furniture. If I hold her hands she tries to walk. She speaks Kirian language fluently, and there is lots of emotion, high pitch and intonation in her speech that somehow I almost always can guess what she is talking about. She loves dogs (oh, boy, I am afraid she might be turning into little Anya). She has 5 teeth and does a good job chewing soft solids like fruits, pasta, teething buscuits...She eats like a bird though, and no wonder she's in 25% right now. As far as her height, she's 90%. She wakes up countless times at night I do not see that changing any time soon. She's been using a big girl's potty successfully for the past month following into the steps of her big bro.
She's learned to clap and wave good bye (or maybe it's hello:)). She radiates happiness and always has a smile for you...as long as she's with mama. She still reminds me Aaron a lot when he was her age. I think they act the same, develop the same and look the same:) It's like having a deja vu.
She loves Aaron and he by most part does well with her too. We had to go through some rough period of sibling adjustment and what we came to realize is that attention and time spend with just Aaron was crucial.
There is so much more I want to say about Kira but I can't put it all in words. I praise the Lord for her life and presence in our lives.

Kids

I was writing a post about Kira turning 9 months old when our computer got unplugged. So, I am not starting it over again. Not today. But here is a cute picture of Aaron and Kira. That's when I say: "It's ok, Kira", and guard over Aaron to make sure his affection towards his sister doesn't go overboard.

Dr. Wolfy-astronaut

Aaron's favorite cartoon these days is "Nu, pogodi!" with Wolfy and Bunny. His favorite episode is where they go to a spaceship station.
The other day Aaron was pretend playing. He put his astronaut helmet on, put all the stuffed toys in the Moses basket and got in there himself. I asked him: "What are you doing?" He said: "Mama, I am a wolf-astronaut. I am going to space." So I asked: "And what about being a doctor? I thought you wanted to be a doctor." Aaron paused for a second then said: "Ok. I am going to be a wolf-astronaut who treats patients in space"
So curious, so inquisitive, so funny and adorable.
One day Cliff was relaxing on the sofa and I was in the kitchen. Aaron was pretend playing with Cliff. Aaron was a surgeon and Cliff was a patient. Aaron goes:
-Papa, I am going to cut you open to do a surgery.
-No. You can't do that. You need to obtain a patient's consent. Do you understand what it is?
-What is it?
-It's when you have to have the patient to agree for you to cut him open. You have to explain to me, why you are going to do that.
-Well, because I want to see what's inside of you.
-Why do you want to see what's inside of me?
-Because it's fun, Papa!
What a fun doctor:)! Who wouldn't want to be cut open after such reasoning:)
Another time I saw him doing blood transfusions to the toys. I asked him what he was doing he answered: "Wolfy was in a bad car accident and lost lots of blood. He needs blood transfusion"

Rolly Pearly

I have been pretty busy lately to keep up with my hobby shop. But a couple of months ago a professional photographer (who I don't know) ordered a few headbands from my shop. I really liked her photography and made a note of her blog to check back for some photography tips some time later. Today as I checked her blog I discovered that she had posted some photos featuring the headbands. Here is the link:

7 months

I thought I'd add just a bit more about her while she's still 7.
Earlier this month Kira started crawling on her fours with her belly off the floor. She usually doesn't get into trouble and happily plays with her toys in the living room.
She's been going back and forth between taking 3-4 naps or just 2. Some days she takes 2 long naps (pretty rarely, though) , and other days those naps are broken into 30-40 minute increments making it up to 4 naps a day.
She's been "talking" a lot lately using different consonants. She says "mama" and I can bet that some of those times she means what she says, like when she wants me to pick her up or when she sees me.
Stranger and separation anxieties are growing stronger. You thought Aaron had those issues? You should see Kira:) Though, she's usually pretty good with Cliff.

Kira reminds me Aaron a lot when he was that little and yet they're so different. It's amazing. Kira is a better eater than Aaron was at this age but she's not gaining nearly as many pounds as he was. She weighs around 17 lb right now. Tall and slim.

Kira is 7 months old

Without being partial Kira is the cutest little girl I have ever seen and I am blessed to have her as my daughter. It's getting harder to take a picture of her just sitting. She's constantly pulling something into her mouth. She's a content and happy baby, loving and gentle.

Triple Trouble

We're enjoying a visit from the cousins. The boys are having a blast. In the morning we went to the park where this picture (and others in the album) were taken, and after the afternoon nap we headed to the pool for about an hour before dinner. Tomorrow is the Aaron's first 3rd Birthday celebration.

12 or 2

This might seem like a bit personal note on the blog but I thought I'd share the story with you just in case. A few months ago when I was visiting in Indianapolis I had to see a dentist for a toothache. It turned out to be a root canal which was treated right then. At the same time the dentist (with Indy Dental Group) did x-rays and gave me a full mouth check up and came up with...12 cavities! I declined treatment because I didn't have an opportunity to fix my teeth in Indianapolis. I thought I'd do it in VA. So, today I went to see my Ashburn dentist. All I told him was that I had a root canal work a couple of months ago. He did x-rays and examined me and found...only 2 cavities. Now, we're not talking about 1-2 cavities difference, but 10. That would be hard to miss, right?

Kira is 6 month old

Weight 15lb 15 oz (50%)
Height 27 1/4" (95%)
OFC 16 3/4 " (50%)

Immunizations: Pentacel #2 (DTaP, IPV, Hib), Rotavirus, PCV13

This sweetheart is not feeling well after her 6 months check up. She had a reaction to Pentacel #2 with high fever up to 103.2 for a couple of days. I made a mistake and took her to the doctor to a walk in clinic for sick kids in a waiting room full of other actually contagious sick kids. Now we believe she has a viral infection on top of her shots reaction.
So unusual to see her quiet and not smiling. I miss that crinkled nose and her ear to ear smile, her squeals and squeaks. Praying that she recovers fast.

Cliff was going to wash the car today and he called Aaron to help him out. Aaron said: "Papa, I am going to wash the car by myself but you can help me".

We both lost our cell phones yesterday, on separate occasions. We got new cell phones but no contacts whatsoever. Please, forward me your phone number by e-mail. Thank you!

These days..

We're enjoying our new home, our neighborhood and nice weather. Our days are filled with trips to the library, to the park where Aaron hangs out with his girlfriends (two Anyas), playing in the sandbox in the backyard, among other things. Aaron made friends with our neighor girls, Nikki (2 y.o) and her sister Missy (6 y.o.) He especially likes Missy, who likes taking care of younger children. They're two very sweet girls and I am happy they're our neighbors. Aaron gets very excited when he's allowed to play in their backyard with lots of tots equipment there. Their mother, Alex, is a very nice lady.
I am trying my best to spend more time with Aaron these days, or do something special with him or for him. I am more atuned to that now that I realized that sibling rivalry and jealousy is partially to blame for his bad behavior. It helps. But there is still only so much I can do as a mother of two.
Cliff has been busy around the house, painting and fixing it up. I planted some herbs and flowers.
We visited Christian Fellowship Church in Ashburn and liked it. We attended their welcoming new visitors lunch and got to learn more about the church, so we're most likely to stay there. Their Sunday school will make grade switch in June and we're considering to starting Aaron there then.

Brother and Sister

I snapped these pictures the other day when Aaron got a new book at the library and that was the book of the day.
The pictures depict so well how Kira feels about Aaron. She's smitten by him. He makes her smile and laugh and wiggle her legs and arms when she sees him. Aaron, on the other hand, is a mystery wrapped in a riddle for me. Sometimes he's so good with her and other times I don't recognize him. We're pretty sure it's that sibling adjustment that's hitting him right now, 5 months later, when all the grandparents are gone, Cliff is at work, and it's just me dividing my time and attention between the two of them. Hopefully, our patience and love will steer him in the right direction.
Today at the library Aaron picked some robot books. He seems to be getting interested in robots and spaceships right now. In September Aaron will be starting a pre-school. Two days a week, two hours a day. The pre-school is right around the corner. I hoping he does well there. As of now he says he wants to go to school....but only with mama.

My Mother's Day Present

Cliff and Aaron bought me flowers. I was preparing to put the flowers in the vase and Aaron was sitting at the counter watching me. Then he goes: "I gave mama the flowers because she's the best girl in the world and because I love her very much". Cliff overheard it and said that it was completely impromptu.

Happy Mother's Day to all Mothers!

What a wonderful way to celebrate motherhood! Happy Mother's day to every woman who poured her life into others. It's the hardest labor on earth, and may our Lord reward you for all your sacrifices, sleepless nights, love and care.

The Move

So it's been almost a week since we moved to our home. And unpacking is still under way. We love our new house and our neighborhood. For me, it turned out better than I expected. The house seems to be in a better shape when it's vacant and cleaned. We're in the process of cleaning the carpet before we can replace it. And our new carpet cleaner is doing a good job. Our breakfast/dining area has a big window (you can see it from the front of the house). The neighborhood is beautiful and very friendly. The day we moved we met all our close neighbors (I only met one neighbor in a little over a year when we lived in Gaitherburg). Everyone was coming over to greet us and welcome us to the neighborhood. LOTS of kids. Probably every other house on the block has either a pre-schooler or a kindergartener. Just couple houses down the road is a long trail that takes you through a field and woods. 5 minute walk on the trail and you're in the woods on a huge shaded playground. Ashburn Park.
Our computer is dying a slow death and I can't import any more pictures:(
